We can’t possibly “measure” the amount of fun we’ve been having! A fun activity in our math area with pegs lead the children into a fun math activity. The children began stacking the pegs when Grayson asked “how tall is mine? “We brought out the tape measure and measure that his was 37 inches in height. Then Nikhil wanted to know how tall his was, so he placed his next to Grayson’s and they compared the two. Grayson’s look taller the children agreed. We measured Nikhil’s and his measured 25 inches. We looked at the numbers on our tape measure and learned that 25 was a smaller number than 37. This continued with the children adding more and more pegs until they couldn’t reach the top so they laid it down on the ground and made one long line of pegs, measuring along the way.

Vroom, vroom, vroom… In Room 1, we’re going to the zoo!

Vroom, vroom, vroom… In Room 1, we’re going to the zoo!

By admin on October 11, 2018 in Ms. Heather Whole school; Whole child with No Comments

We have been busy exploring all things zoo in our classroom! After the children expressed interest in dressing up as animals, we decided to turn our dramatic play area into a zoo. During the planning process the children determined that we needed tickets for people to enter the zoo, zookeepers to feed the animals, a veterinarian office for the animals to visit when they are sick, and of course costumes so the children can dress up as their favorite animal. We have added a check in table where children can write their name in order to receive their zoo ticket.

What is that smell? We are learning about our five senses: sight, touch, smell, hear, and taste. Rowan and Jaxon conducted an experiment that explored four out of the five senses. A baking soda and vinegar reaction is always fun! Especially when we get to mix colors.

An invitation to create our own faces was set up on the table for the children to explore. They were provided with loose parts to glue onto their papers. This helped them acquire facial recognition, while enhancing their fine motor skill; specifically focusing on their pincer grip.

We read the story ‘Froggy Gets a Doggy’ and we had a discussion about our pets. That afternoon Mason, a therapy dog, came in to visit our class. We learned about what dogs can and can not eat. While also learning about safety when encountering other dogs. The children were able to feed Mason a treat and pet his soft fur. We then drew pictures the next day to thank Mason and his trainer Sylvia for coming to our class.

Making connections between home and school in Ms. Heater’s class

By admin on October 1, 2018 in Whole school; Whole child with No Comments

This month we have been discussing families as well as the children’s likes and dislikes. At home, each child created an “All About Me” page, with one side detailing what makes the child special and the other side sharing all about their family. The children had an opportunity to present their page at group time. Finally, we created a class book using the All About Me pages. It has been a very popular book in our classroom!

While taking a break from our All About Me books, activities, and games, the children in Room 7 made pieces of art work using paint, sponges, Q-tips, and glitter. They expressed themselves through art using the materials in unique ways. We plan to display these paintings on our art gallery board along with the children’s self-portraits, as we all get to know each other better at the start of this school year!
