Bugs have taken over our classroom! While the children are busy researching their bug projects at home, we have been exploring bugs in many of our classroom centers. Bug stencils were added to the writing center. Butterfly counters were used to create a counting game in our math center. A caterpillar countdown has been the focus of our group times as we eagerly await their arrival! And at the art table the children created a beautiful spider web weaving!

Exploring things that ‘spin’ in Ms. Tanya’s class

Exploring things that ‘spin’ in Ms. Tanya’s class

By admin on April 10, 2018 in Ms. Tanya Whole school; Whole child with No Comments

Spinning tops on a rainy day sparked an interest in things that spin and how they spin and what makes them stay spinning. We explored everyday objects to see what spins and what makes them spin. The children had many wonderful examples of things that spin- bicycle pedals, wheels on a bus, fidget spinner, our globe and windmills just to name a few. We then discussed what makes them spin and what keeps them spinning. Bicycle pedals spin when you use your “feet”, “wind” spins the windmill around, the tires on a bus are controlled by the “bus engine”, we use our “fingers” to spin the fidget spinners and our “hand” to spin the globe. We also did some spin art. We placed a piece of construction paper on a lazy susan and the children took turns spinning the paper while another child dropped paint on the paper using pipettes to create some awesome designs.

ABCDEFG….. well you know the rest! With the children’s interest in spelling their names and letters, we turned our focus on the alphabet.
We discussed what letters are used for- “Spelling our names”, said Carter. “Making words, like names of animals and things “, said Olivia.
We sounded out letters and read words such as cat, hat, sat, bat, pop, hop Etc. The children made their own books using letter stencils. We also added foam letters to our shaving cream for a fun sensory experience. “Hey, I found an “H” for Haven”, said Haven. We used letter stamps and paint to create letter collages.
