Vroom, vroom, vroom… In Room 1, we’re going to the zoo!

We have been busy exploring all things zoo in our classroom! After the children expressed interest in dressing up as animals, we decided to turn our dramatic play area into a zoo. During the planning process the children determined that we needed tickets for people to enter the zoo, zookeepers to feed the animals, a veterinarian office for the animals to visit when they are sick, and of course costumes so the children can dress up as their favorite animal. We have added a check in table where children can write their name in order to receive their zoo ticket.

Journaling In Room 1- Ms. Heather’s Class

By admin on September 24, 2018 in Ms. Heather Whole school; Whole child with No Comments

While everyone is excited to start the new school year, the children in Room 1 are thrilled to start using their new school journals! This week, we drew journal entries about our families. We discussed how many people are in our families and what makes our families special. A few children asked to practice writing their name in their journal, so they used their name tag to practice. Providing children with the opportunity to explore meaningful writing concepts is key to instilling a love for writing later in life!

Raising Butterflies

Our class loved watching the many changes that occurred during our caterpillars’ transition to becoming butterflies. The children enjoyed drawing pictures of the caterpillars as well as creating a butterfly art gallery. When it came time to say goodbye to our butterflies the children selected a nice mint plant to release our new friends on to. We hope to see our butterfly friends visit our garden again soon!

BUGS… BUGS… EVERYWHERE!!!!!!

By admin on April 16, 2018 in Ms. Heather Whole school; Whole child with No Comments

Bugs have taken over our classroom! While the children are busy researching their bug projects at home, we have been exploring bugs in many of our classroom centers. Bug stencils were added to the writing center. Butterfly counters were used to create a counting game in our math center. A caterpillar countdown has been the focus of our group times as we eagerly await their arrival! And at the art table the children created a beautiful spider web weaving!

Working hard in the Post Office – Ms. Heather’s class

After creating mailboxes out of donated cereal boxes, the children spent the last week creating mail for each other. On the table the children’s name tags were available, along with a variety of envelopes, markers, paper, and post it notes. The children were encouraged to select another student to create a piece of mail for and then deliver it to the child’s mailbox. This project turned into a wonderful lesson on social interaction in the classroom when children were overheard asking “What is your favorite color? I want to make mail for you” and “Can you show me your mailbox? I made you something special!”.

Leah paints a strip of watercolor paper using “warm” liquid watercolors. The children had a choice between painting with warm colors (orange, red, yellow, pink) or cool colors (teal, blue, green, purple). The strips of paper were later turned into a beautiful weaving that will be on auction at our Art Show next month.

We Built A Stage!

We Built A Stage!

By admin on October 24, 2017 in Ms. Heather with No Comments

Our “stage” is a wooden platform that was built during a woodworking project made by last year’s students. This stage can take many forms in our classroom. Often the children build on it creating cities or extremely tall towers. Sometimes it’s used for an impromptu musical performance. But this week it has become a car! […]
