Why Does Ice Melt?

The kids of Room 9 are shown here playing with blocks of ice that have figurines and legos frozen into them, which Ms. Meagan had asked them to remove. The kids worked together, with their hands and their popsicle sticks, to figure out how to get the objects out of the ice. They noticed that the more water was in the tub the easier it was to free the figurines. At first they asked for more water to melt the ice, but eventually figured out it wasn’t the water making the ice melt, instead it was the melted ice turning into water. This activity helped the kids to learn more about temperature and the properties of water. It also helped them to develop their communication skills, their problem solving skills, and their ability to come up with creative solutions.

Working with different shapes in Room 9

We are practicing identifying and recognizing different shapes such as a square, hexagon and rectangle. The children are asking their classmates which shapes they should use to stamp and paint. After choosing the shapes they then will count how many of each different shapes they used.
