Creepy Crawlers in Room 7

We spent the first weeks back to school in January finishing up our Insect/Creepy Crawlers theme. When we were studying butterflies we learned about their life cycle. We illustrated how they start out as eggs on a leaf, then hatch into caterpillars, wrap themselves into a chrysalis attached to a branch, then finally emerge as a butterfly. The children used liquid watercolors with pipettes, coffee filters, and clothes pins to create their own butterflies. We read several books about butterflies and leaned about the main differences between butterflies and moths. (Butterflies come out usually in the daytime, are generally more colorful than moths, and rest with their wings folded up behind them, whereas moths generally come out at night, are most often dully colored, and rest with their wings spread out side to side. Also, butterflies emerge from a chrysalis or pupa, while moths come out of a cocoon.)
After studying all different kinds of insects, the children enjoyed a lacing activity and were pleased to be able to identify all 6 of the insects on the picture cards.

While taking a break from our All About Me books, activities, and games, the children in Room 7 made pieces of art work using paint, sponges, Q-tips, and glitter. They expressed themselves through art using the materials in unique ways. We plan to display these paintings on our art gallery board along with the children’s self-portraits, as we all get to know each other better at the start of this school year!
