This week the children in Room 1 read “Stone Soup”, a fable about the importance of sharing and community. They were inspired and decided they wanted to make their own stone soup. They put a big pot, filled with clean stones, in the center of the table and all the students took turns cutting up veggies and putting them in the pot. A parent helper cooked the soup and the children ate it alongside their lunches. This was the first time chopping anything for many of the students. Learning to use a knife builds fine motor skills, dexterity, and problem solving skills.

With Mother’s Day approaching quickly, the kids are rushing to finalize their gifts. In Room 1, this means that the kids finally took seedlings from their group gardens, and transplanted them into their individual containers. The seedlings were put in plastic cup with fresh dirt, sprayed with water, and then another cup was placed on top to emulate the greenhouse effect. This activity expanded the children’s scientific knowledge. The transplanting also improved fine motor skills, and the spraying with water improved dexterity and problem solving skills a the children learned to use a new tool.

Let me introduce you to “Planty,” Room 1′s basil plant. Room 1 has been focusing a lot on planting and nature; part of that has been caring for this basil plant. When the teacher brought them this plant, the kids promptly named it Planty and noticed that the tag says the plant needs “full sun”. They became worried because there is only limited sun in the classroom, so they asked their teacher to let them take Planty for walks in the sun every day, which she agreed to. Caring for this plant has been a great way to foster the kids’ kindness and empathy, as well as teach responsibility.

When Room 1′s teacher read a new book to the kids this morning, they realized that there were no pictures! Consequently, the children were each given one or more pages of this new book, and told to illustrate what the text was saying. The book deals with farming and growing plants, so as they drew, the kids were able to learn new scientific concepts while improving their fine motor skills and hand eye coordination. Drawing is also an important tool to develop cognitive thinking and help to conceptualize new ideas.

Room 1 has been working on creating their own board games. They are given a template for the board and a pre-cut paper to make the dice. The kids get to assign their own colors and rules, create character pieces, and make dice with any combination of numbers that they choose. This activity helps to promote creativity and imagination, improves fine motor skills, and helps them to learn more numbers.

Exploring Dark vs. Light

Exploring Dark vs. Light

By admin on April 12, 2019 in Room 1 Whole school; Whole child with No Comments

Room 1 is working on a box for their classroom. The children chose how to decorate it and they worked together to decide to make the box light on the outside and dark on the inside. They used their communication skills to discuss what they wanted and why, explaining that having it dark on the inside would make it like nighttime and the light colors outside would match their bright classroom. They worked together and used a new tool, the roller brush, to do this project, which improved their fine motor and teamwork skills.
