Room 8′s New Friend

Room 8′s New Friend

This week Room 8 attained a new friend. This friend is a monarch caterpillar. The students all used books to help each other find out more about the caterpillar and what it will look like when it transforms to a butterfly. Having a caterpillar in the class help introduce the students to new scientific concepts and promotes conversation and communication.

Fabric Fun in Room 8

Room 8 is pictured here drawing on different types of fabric instead of their normal paper. The fabrics had varying textures and creases and the children enjoyed seeing how this affected the ink and overall appearance. Using new mediums for creative expression help children to view things as multi-purposed and build creativity and imagination.

New ” Paint Brushes” in Room 8

The children in Room 8 are pictured here using kitchen tools to paint. Using items outside of their intended use is a great way to demonstrate that there are many ways to use most tools, and many ways to accomplish a task even without typical tools. This activity promotes creativity, imagination, and problem solving.

Building Bird Boxes with Room 8

Room 8 is working on making nest boxes for birds. They have been learning about spring and all the new animals that come with it. This activity allows them to use their creativity and imagination while developing fine motor skills. Activities that involve caring for animals are also a great way to build empathy.

Group Time with Room 8

Group Time with Room 8

Here Room 8 is shown doing group time after one of the students brought in stuffed animals. The students on the ground take turns asking questions about the stuffed animals while the kids in the seat respond and write down key words. Here they are shown writing the word “Penguin”. The teacher helps with the spelling, while the kids work together to show each other what the letters look like. This activity improves cognitive thinking and communication skills, as well as the children’s writing and spelling abilities.
