Pictured here are the students of Room 9 playing with shaving cream and popsicle sticks. Playing with shaving cream is a great form of sensory play. Sensory play encourages children to manipulate materials which builds up their fine motor skills and coordination. This type of play can also be great to encourage self expression, because there is no desired end product, the children to do and create whatever they want.

The children of Room 9 are pictured here painting using fake flowers. They have been learning about gardening and plants. While they were painting, their teacher had a discussion with them about the flowers; she asked them whether they were fake or real, and had them explain why they though one way or the other. This activity helped the children explore new scientific concepts, develop fine and gross motor skills, and improve communication skills.

Caterpillars in Room 9

Room 9 is learning about caterpillars as part of their Spring theme. Many of them have noticed the new bugs that they are finding outside, so their teacher is helping them to learn about them inside the classroom. To do this the kids constructed their own fuzzy caterpillars with paper rolls, wet glue, and furry pompoms. Besides learning new scientific concepts, this activity helped develop fine motor skills and the patience it takes to work with wet glue.

Little Dreamers’ Body Builders

Playing in the gym helps to promote social and communication skills, while also strengthening muscles and coordination. Room 9 has also just recently started roleplaying while in the gym. Some pretend to be soccer stars and body builders, while others like to play family.
